“I’ve Been Stuck Wishing for Better Days”
A new song release by Catt, as well as a new album announcement!!
I met Ogushi through Tana of Penguin no Yuuutsu, and since that day I’ve been indebted to him for his gracious support and help in interpreting for the interviews I’ve conducted! I first heard his band, Catt, the same day as our first interaction, and he introduced me to the band 8otto too, with whom Catt shares a connection of collaboration with as mentioned below!
Today, with the release of their new song ‘Your Song’, Catt have announced the upcoming release of their second album ‘At the End of the Corridor” in Spring 2024! The band describes their newest song and upcoming project in their own words below:
“Four years after the release of their first album "Catt", which was co-produced by Masaki Maenosono (8otto/Muddy Apes), Catt will be releasing their new album named "At the End of Corridor" in the spring of 2024. Sometimes running away, sometimes hiding, and their members being fluctuating, Catt has survived to accomplish this album about "someone or something waiting at the end of each one's own long corridor." This album will bring strength to those for whom fear waits, courage to those for whom doors wait, and relief to those who are alone at the end of their corridor. "your song" is the first single to be released from "At the End of Corridor". This song was written at the beginning of the band members' transition, and represents Catt itself, which is expanding and involving its surroundings and listeners in its process.
Catt is a rock band based on Tokyo. Melodious riffs layered in Vocal/Guitar/Bass are their core of the sounds.
Members:
-Vo.+Gt: Ogushi Ryushiro. Joined 50 pears as percussion and noise, and Penguin No Yuuutsu as support guitarist.
-Dr.: Otsubo Hirokazu
-Dr. Matsunaga Yuta
-Dr. Miura Shun. Drummer of 50 pears. Joined Penguin No Yuuutsu as support drummer.
-Ba. Kusumoto Masaaki
-Ba. Hosotani Keisuke
-Gt. Tanaka Yoshitaka
-Gt. Suzuki Ichi”
The slow-motion fall of the song’s introduction is caught by the swooping, weighted drum beats, and then swept along in the remorseful recollections of Ogushi’s singing. The myriad of melodies, towering in presence right from the first verse, maintain deliberate measure in their volume and presence, never becoming overwhelming or torrential. The vast number of members working within the album makes the coordination of the sound all the more impressive, given how it invokes sorrowful contemplations with such laser-precision.
“I will never ever know what you're trying to tell.
Speak to me, my only song”
The lament manifests within an array of reflections on the past and the enduring, lingering presence of another in memory and perception, with the repetitions and recitations of the chorus perfectly mimicking the emotional highs and lows of internal retrospection. This particular thematic presentation is distinct from the moods of previous Catt releases, and I really look forward to seeing how it fits within the entire album’s intention!
I’m really grateful to have had the opportunity to listen to the song earlier this week, and I’m eagerly awaiting this second album release from Catt after really enjoying their first self-titled album! The developments between these releases are already audibly palpable: my favourite song from the first album, ‘Addiction’, features a completely different style of singing, but is uniform with the band’s discography in how it also features English lyrics. This always struck me as a deliberate artistic decision, which ascribes a distinct identity and outlook to the band’s work.
I intend on writing more about the album closer to its release, so please do look forward to hearing and reading more about Catt in future!
